A roller shutter door motor is not a generic part. It is chosen against the weight of the curtain it has to lift, the height it has to lift it, and the number of times a day it will do so. Types of Roller Shutter Door Motors We Install
Tubular motors. Fitted inside the barrel, quiet and unobtrusive. Suited to residential and light commercial curtains where the weight is modest and the door is opened a handful of times a day.
Side-mounted motors. Mounted beside the barrel and geared for heavier curtains. The usual choice on commercial shopfronts and larger openings.

Retrofitting a Motor to an Existing Door
Most manual doors can be motorised without replacing the curtain, provided the door itself is sound. What we check first:
Is the curtain in good order? Motorising a door with bent slats or worn guides puts the fault onto the motor. Any repairs needed come first.
Is there room for the drive? Side-mounted motors need clearance beside the barrel that a manual door was never designed to leave.
Is there power at the right point? If not, an electrical supply run is quoted as a separate line rather than discovered on the day.
Will the barrel take the drive? Older barrels sometimes need adapting, and occasionally a new door is the better spend — we will say so if that is the case.
Sizing: The Number That Decides Everything
Curtain weight is the figure everything else follows from, and it is not guessed. It comes from the slat profile, the gauge, and the finished curtain area — which is why the door gets measured before a motor is specified.
From there: the motor’s torque rating has to exceed the load with margin, not meet it exactly; the duty rating has to match how often the door actually cycles, not how often it is supposed to; and on anything where being stuck shut is a business problem, a manual override is fitted as standard.
An undersized motor is the single most common cause of the motor failures we are called to. It is also the easiest place for a cheaper quote to hide.
